About DKG
The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International was founded May 11, 1929, at the Faculty Women’s Club at the University of Texas, Austin, Texas. Alpha Chapter of Alpha State Organization placed a plaque where the Women's Club once stood on campus. Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, member of the faculty of the University of Texas and a former state superintendent of public instruction in Texas, conceived the idea of an organization for women educators. Eleven women educators from Texas, representing various professional positions in education, were initiated by Dr. Blanton. Alpha Chapter was installed on June 3, 1929.
Our History
The Gamma Beta Chapter of Eta State, Delta Kappa Gamma International, is composed of outstanding women educators from Polk and Rutherford Counties. As a bit of history, the Rho Chapter of Eta State was chartered in 1946 to include Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, Polk, and Rutherford Counties. In 1953, Rho chapter was divided to form the Alpha Epsilon Chapter. Alpha Epsilon included Cleveland, Polk, and Rutherford Counties. In 1976, after twenty three years, Alpha Epsilon was asked to divide. Gamma Beta, therefore, was chartered on March 27th, 1976 to include the members of Alpha Epsilon from Polk and Rutherford Counties.
There were forty four charter members. Two of the charter members continue to be members of Gamma Beta: Margaret G. Miller and Joan D. Wall. Margaret Miller celebrated her 100th birthday on December 5, 2019.
